I should add the most famous modern day guidelines given through the Prophet Joseph Smith - commonly referred to as The Word of Wisdom

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 89
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, February 27, 1833. HC 1: 327–329. As a consequence of the early brethren using tobacco in their meetings, the Prophet was led to ponder upon the matter; consequently he inquired of the Lord concerning it. This revelation, known as the Word of Wisdom, was the result. The first three verses were originally written as an inspired introduction and description by the Prophet.

  1 A Word OF Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion—
  2 To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days—
  3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.
  4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—
  5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.
  6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.
  7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.
  8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.
  9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.
  10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—
  11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving.
  12 Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;
  13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.
  14 All grain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the staff of life, not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the earth;
  15 And these hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger.
  16 All grain is good for the food of man; as also the fruit of the vine; that which yieldeth fruit, whether in the ground or above the ground—
  17 Nevertheless, wheat for man, and corn for the ox, and oats for the horse, and rye for the fowls and for swine, and for all beasts of the field, and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks, as also other grain.
  18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;
  19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;
  20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.
  21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

Hi Jim, how you doing?

In reference to your question about scripture/herbs being used today in modern Christianity.  The references you may be seeking for may be the following.  I'm not sure.  Dr. Christopher mentions modern day references/revelation to the use of herbs in scripture.  Dr. Christopher was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who believe in modern day revelation through living prophets.  Joseph Smith, was the original latter-day prophet and the following was revealed through him.

D&C 42:43
 43 And whosoever among you are sick, and have not faith to be healed, but believe, shall be nourished with all tenderness, with herbs and mild food, and that not by the hand of an enemy.

D&C 59:17
  17 Yea, and the herb, and the good things which come of the earth, whether for food or for raiment, or for houses, or for barns, or for orchards, or for gardens, or for vineyards;
  18 Yea, all things which come of the earth, in the season thereof, are made for the benefit and the use of man, both to please the eye and to gladden the heart;
  19 Yea, for food and for raiment, for taste and for smell, to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul.
  20 And it pleaseth God that he hath given all these things unto man; for unto this end were they made to be used, with judgment, not to excess, neither by extortion.

Hey Dannyboy,  Grin
Thanks for your post. I like the way you are thinking.

A question: does anyone know of a reference in the Bible that directly instructs us to use herbs as medicine in this current age. I find in Ezekial the prophecy showing their use in the future. I find their use referred to throughout scripture. Am having trouble finding a direct instruction for the current age.

Comments?

Thanks,
Jim

I'm no expert, but from books and things that I've read, the two sources of strength and healing for a tooth are the nerve and the saliva.  IF the saliva is not too acidic, and IF the saliva can get to the enamel (i.e., food or plaque isn't in the way, or glycerine from toothpaste, possibly) it can deposit minerals onto the enamel, filling in tiny cracks and weak spots.  The nerve portion is the life of the tooth.  Once it's gone, the body would generally push the tooth out, right?  But a root canal somehow (usually) fools the body so the shell of the tooth stays there even though it's dead.  Crowned teeth have had a pretty big portion of the outside enamel removed, and with the cap in the way, they're not going to re-harden; with the crown off, they hurt a lot, but it's possible that teeth could harden, though they would probably stay small.
The great news for a crowned tooth is this:  it is very common, even with great dental hygeine, for the crack at the base of a crown to decay, inviting all kinds of problems.  Maybe the use of tooth powder can prevent this further decay.  It is loaded with mineral-rich, bacteria-killing herbs, so that's great news for a root-canaled tooth too, because its dead pores can still house bacteria and let infection into the body.  And if, say, you couldn't get to a dentist when one of those teeth DID give up and die, herbs could help the body move it on out of there with minimal pain, avoiding excruciating abscesses and leaving nothing behind but healthy gums and jaw.

AND... the great news for the other teeth is that maybe they don't have to go through what the others did.   AND maybe our little ones can start stronger than we did.

I've been thinking... Someone mentioned in a post months ago that the ADA (I think) did a study that showed brushing immediately after eating to be a bad idea, since the acid in the saliva weakened the enamel, but that later the saliva alkalizes (assuming the body has minerals on hand for this) and the enamel becomes more resistant to brushing again... I've been hearing more and more lately about the acid attack during eating; that if you snack on even the healthiest foods throughout the day it's worse for your teeth than if you sat down and ate a pound of caramel in 5 minutes, only once a day...?...
SO.... would it make sense to rinse really well right after eating - with that glass of water at the table that you don't need mixed with your digestive juices, really, anyway - then brush 20 minutes later, or whenever, to encourage alkalinity, scrub away plaque and the few bits of food that stayed behind, then pack the gums with tooth powder at least before bed, to nourish?
Or... do you think that tooth powder would get that acid saliva running to digest it, and hurt the teeth too....?  My experience says no, but I'm curious to test the ph of my saliva when it's in there over the next while.  Thoughts, anyone?

Here's one more I've considered: since wheat grass juice is so much like our blood, and since bones IN the body can re-grow in astonishing ways, what would happen if you kept a pretty constant supply of it in contact with a tooth?  On the other hand, saliva can be pretty similar to our blood (in ph and such; carries nutrients, etc.) when we're not eating, so maybe when diet and lifestyle are wholesome, we already have the perfect delivery mechanism right there: from the food we eat, right to our enamel.
I'm looking forward to trying the powder with comfrey in it.

Ok next question...
What would happen if you use the tooth powder and you've already had root canals?  I've had 2.  Can it regrow the nerve?  Also, I've had all 6 of my front top teeth crowned/capped.  (As I say, poor breeding! Grin LOL)  What would happen with crowns/caps?  Will it regrow the tooth under the cap?

Due to the new health care plan, someone close to me is losing insurance coverage on the medications that help him with his fibromialgia. He is worried about being able to find them elsewhere and having to pay a fortune for them. He loves herbs and is a firm believer in them, but the transition from his modern day medicine help, to living off of using herbs to help is going to not be an easy one, because herbs take time for healing, and his pain is scary.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where he can start first?
