One summer evening my 3 year old was bitten by a brown recluse spider on his arm. I did not realize this until the following morning when the site of the bite was very swollen (about 3cm in diameter) itchy and painful. The actual site of the bite had already started to necrotisize and turn black and the tissue in the center was gone leaving an oozing hole. He was very uncomfortable. I went to the garden and dug a complete plantain plant. Roots and all, went to the kitchen, washed the dirt off the roots, put it in my mortar and pestle and began mashing it adding just enough boiling water to make a paste. I applied this paste over the entire site and bound it with cotton gauze. It brought relief almost immediately. We left the first poultice on for 24 hours. When I removed it, the swelling was down by 2/3, in the center there was a pocket of what looked like pus beginning to form and about a 1/4 inch ring of black mushy tissue around this, resembling a bulls eye. I rinsed the area and repeated the above process. Because there was no pain or discomfort, this time I left the poultice on for 48 hours and when I took it off I was amazed. First, all the swelling was completely gone, the blacken tissue also, the initial layer of skin where the blackened tissue was was gone but the wound revealed healthy tissue in that area and in the center, maybe 2-3mm in diameter was this bright white/yellow lump. The skin over it was gone, so I gave it a gentle, little squeeze helping it push more to the surface. A piece came out. I say piece because that is exactly what it was it was like a piece of wet toilet paper. I grabbed it with some tweezers and was amazed. I squeezed it again and more came, I grabbed it. I did this several times until the white was all gone. This was how the poison came out. In chunks, like wet tissue paper! He had a pretty significant hole in his arm so I just kept it filled with comfrey root powder until it healed. The ironic thing was that after this had happened a friend from back east called me and told me he had been bitten on the back by a brown recluse ( practically the same time my son was going through this). He went to the hospital where a wick was placed in his bite, the area got infected and he was miserable for several weeks trying to heal. This is only one episode of where the drawing powers of plantain has amazed me. Will share more later.
